The book is designed with the aim to provide fundamental knowledge of computer system, basic concepts of Internet world and application of cloud computing.

Unit 1 introduces computer, its characteristics and its applications along with real-time examples. This unit also discusses the classification of computers based on their size and type, working technology and the application of computer in different domain areas. Moreover, work-flow of computer system is explained using block diagram.

As a computer user, we need to be aware of the memory present in a computer as well as main components of the computer, their functions and the interconnection between the different components of the computer and role of software which provides communication channel between hardware and user.  Unit 2 describes concept of bus, different kind of memories along with their use and the interaction between them, hardware components and concept of software.

We use computer to process the data and get the desired output. The data input can be in the form of alphabets, digits, symbols, audio, video, magnetic cards, finger prints, etc. Since computer can only understand 0 and 1, the data must be presented to the computer in terms of 0s and 1s. The purpose of Unit 3 is to introduce you to the data representation in the computer i.e. introduction of decimal, binary, octal, and hexadecimal number system, conversion of decimal to binary and vice versa along with ASCII and ANSI character code.

The functioning of a computer system is based on the combined usage of both input and output devices as it provides an interface between the user and the computer. In Unit 4, we have discussed the functionalities of various input and output devices.

At present, Internet has become very popular. The services provided by Internet help the present human civilization to such an extent that life without internet seems to be impossible.  You may have heard people using terms like the cloud, cloud computing, or cloud storage. But what exactly is the cloud? Simply put, the cloud is the Internet-more specifically, it's all of the things you can access remotely over the Internet. When something is in the cloud, it means it's stored on Internet servers instead of your computer's hard drive. Unit 5 describes concepts of Internet, its services, technical view and cloud computing.

This subject is not only important to have a basic awareness of how a computer system works but is also equally significant for competitive exam aspirants. This is because Computer Knowledge is an essential part of the syllabus for major Government exams conducted in the country.
